Commander's Bio  

Jose Guadalupe Garza was born in Brownsville, Texas.  Lupe, as he is known to many, and his family moved to Richmond, Texas at the very young age of 5 and has remained in Richmond all his life.  He is a graduate of Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg and attended Wharton Junior College.

Lupe joined the Army in April, 1958, and took basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.  He took advance training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington.  In 1959 he was stationed in Germany where he was assigned to the 20th Transportation Battalion of the Eighth Infantry Division at Bad Kreuznach.  While in Germany, he participated in all NATO exercises and was selected to attend the 8th Infantry Division Non-Commissioned Officer Academy where he graduated March 15, 1960.  Lupe was Honorably Discharged in 1961.

Lupe, and his wife Frances, are the proud parents of three children and four grandchildren.  Daughter Paula Zamora and husband Mike have two children, Courtney and Zachary.  Son Joe, who served in the Army during the Persian Gulf War, and his son Connor.  Son Alex and his wife Stella and their daughter Skye Alexandria.  They are a Legion Family.

Lupe has been a member of John T and George E Fields Post 567, Richmond, for over 25 years.  During this time, he has served his post as Chaplain, Sgt-at-Arms, Vice Commander and served as Post Commander for six years.  He has served as the 9th District Commander, 3rd Division Commander and Department Vice Commander.  He was Number One Post Commander for the Department of Texas for the membership year 2004-2005.  Lupe has also served on numerous committees on the Department and National level.

Lupe has attended the Region Four Leadership School where he completed The American Legion Extension Institute Course.

Lupe is a member of St John Fisher Catholic Church and is a Fourth Degree Knight.  He has served on the Board of Directors of T W Davis Field House, Lamar Little League Association and Lamar Green Hornets Youth Football League Association.  He has devoted 25 year to coaching youngsters in baseball, football and basketball as well as umpiring.  He has also served in different organizations in the community and is a life member of the Fort Bend County Fair Association.

Lupe has served The American Legion for the betterment of our Veterans, Community and State.
