The American Legion has always opposed every form of radicalism and subversion regardless of whether it stemmed from Communists, Nazis, Fascists, or other similar groups. The National Americanism Commission was established in 1919 at the first Annual Convention of the American Legion. The objectives of the Americanism Commission, of course, lie in the area of teaching Americanism, the positive variety, to the youth of our country. At the same time, the National Americanism Commission has made sure that proper emphasis is placed upon the Counter-Subversive Program and, in order to do this, Posts, Counties, Districts, and Departments are called upon to perform service in this very vital area. The objective of the Legion's Counter-Subversive program suggests that an enlightened and informed citizenry is the greatest deterrent to subversive influences within the U.S. In this effort to inform citizens of the subversive threat, the Americanism Commission publishes a monthly publication titled 'Firing Line'. This publication deals primarily with current events relating to subversive influences in our country and abroad. Subscription rates for 'The Firing Line' are $7.00 per year for single subscriptions; $1.50 per year per subscription when 20 or more are mailed to one address. The Americanism Commission suggests that Posts purchase subscriptions for area schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. |
