VA Announces New Sports Clinic for Newly Injured Veterans |

WASHINGTON – One hundred recently injured veterans from around the country will participate in a unique rehabilitative sports experience this September in San Diego, the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic, sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). “This new rehabilitative event is a therapeutic extension of the superior health care veterans receive in our medical centers each day,” said Dr. James B. Peake, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. “The sports clinic will strengthen veterans battling back from injury, improving their mental and physical well-being.”

I WANT TO THANK THE AMERICAN LEGION FAMILY FOR PLACING YOUR TRUST IN ME BY ELECTING ME AS YOUR DEPARTMENT COMMANDER FOR 2008-2009.
I WILL DO MY BEST FOR YOU IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE AMERICAN LEGION. I WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH THE LEADERSHIP AND ALL MEMBERS OF THIS GREAT ORGANIZATION.
MEMBERSHIP IS OUR STRENGTH AND IN NUMBERS, THE MORE WE HAVE, THE LOUDER A VOICE WE WILL HAVE AT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, ON CAPITAL HILL AND HERE AT HOME IN THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.
WE MUST ALL STRIVE TO MAKE THIS GREAT ORGANIZATION EVEN BETTER IN BOTH MEMBERSHIP AND OUR PROGRAMS. TO CONTINUE TO WORK OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAMS, WORK TO INCREASE EDUCATION BENEFITS FOR OUR VETERANS, WORK TO IMPROVE THE CARE OUR VETERANS OF ALL WARS RECEIVE, INCLUDING THOSE WHO ARE RETURNING HOME TODAY.
WE NEED TO PLACE MORE EMPHASIS ON RECRUITING YOUNGER MEMBERS IN THE AMERICAN LEGION, SO WE WILL HAVE CONTINUOUS GROWTH OF LEADERSHIP FOR THE FUTURE. I CHALLENGE EVERY LEGIONNAIRE TO ATTEND YOUR POST MEETINGS AND TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOME WAY THAT BENEFITS YOUR POST AND THE AMERICAN LEGION. COMPLIMENT GOOD WORK AND FIX THOSE THINGS THAT ARE BROKEN.

INDIANAPOLIS (June 12, 2008) – The nation’s leading veterans organization reacted to today’s Supreme Court ruling that foreign terrorist have U.S. constitutional rights. The ruling came as the result of a challenge by detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who want hearings in U.S. civilian courts. |

In July 2007, we issued VA&R Bulletin 22-07 clarifying The American Legion’s policy on attorney referrals in the event such a referral is requested by a veteran or an attorney. That bulletin provided policy that must be adhered to by accredited American Legion representatives. Accredited representatives are individuals officially recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to represent veterans and other claimants, seeking VA benefits, on behalf of The American Legion. As stated in this previous bulletin, American Legion policy does not permit accredited American Legion representatives to refer any claimant seeking VA benefits to an attorney, nor are accredited American Legion representatives permitted to make a specific referral to an attorney at any time. |

Secretary Peake to Hear Their Concerns, Issues
WASHINGTON (May 13, 2008) -- Veterans who served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during 1990–1991 will have their own special advocates before Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake, thanks to a new advisory committee Peake established to respond to issues unique to them.
The 14-member, independent panel will advise the Secretary and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on the full range of health care and benefits needs of those who served in the conflict. |
